Cristo Redentor
What's one of the most iconic statues in the world and especially in Brazil? Yep, that's right - Cristo Redentor or commonly also known as Christ The Redemeer. Perched 710m on top of the eye-opening mountain, Corcovado (which funnily means 'Hunchback'), provides unbeatable 360 degree views across the city . There's several ways to get up to it, commonly the tram or minibus however Hidden Gemsss experienced a rather unique, alternative hiking route. Definitely the cheapest and most rewarding journey, you start at Parque Lage in Jardim Botañico, to follow the worn yet well marked trail up the steep mountain. Be prepared to wear your walking boots and enjoy the spectacular views along the way, reminding you why chose this 2 hour long route. Once you reach the top, you may be covered in sweat, have aching muscles and your heart beating rapidly, but once you capture your breathe you will be in awe of sights that await.
Tip: It's roughly 2,329 ft up so a classic tip but it can get extremely hot and humid so make sure you bring enough water and pace yourself.
On a side note, there's so much to see and do here, if you can we highly recommend going to view the intriguing 'Favelas' such as Rocinha. There's so much to learn and discover here and truly highlights the enormous divergence between rich and poor in Brazil yet they spread so much love with smiles.
